Jæd’s headline show at The Social celebrates the release of her debut album ‘I Loved The Gauntlet And There Was No Other Way’ with special guests Thirukumaran Jeyaseelan & Seigfried Komidashi.
Drawing from a maelstrom of influences: the psychedelic contortions of Yves Tumor, the vocal thrills of Kate Bush, the experimental noise-rock of Deerhoof and the glitched-out, electronic freefalls of Death Grips, Jæd’s subjects matters are deftly captured through a singular lens, dispatched amidst freewheeling, snarling guitars, jagged drum patterns and spiralling vocal runs – in places finding bringing to mind the uncompromising, absorbing songwriting of Fiona Apple, Anna Calvi and Nadine Shah.
Jæd says, “The album is a sort of jewel now. A beautiful decoration. The songs have been like the jewellery I have worn to walk through the difficult parts of life. I can celebrate being alive, and being somewhere different now. I’m not in that same place I was when I was writing these songs. It’s a process that’s alive: it’s still continuing, and will continue.”
Once seen live, Jæd is hard to forget. In her hands, the guitar is choked at the neck, tamed and mastered like a wild animal to yield a particular tone, while her voice – an instrument all of its own – is capable of incredible tenderness one moment, before taking on shades of desperation and defiance the next.
“Jæd brings together a veritable grab bag of influences, collaborators, sounds, and styles, but remains unmistakably in focus throughout…a star making turn” The Line Of Best Fit, 8/10
“…a visceral, eclectic cacophony of sounds” Get In Her Ears, Nov Album of the Month
